Tamil Nadu Trust Vote - Congress, DMK Allies Back TVK Government in Assembly

The newly formed TVK government in Tamil Nadu, led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, received strong support from the Congress and DMK allies during the trust vote discussion in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.

The confidence motion became a major political moment in the State, as the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerged as the single largest party but fell short of a clear majority.

With support from the Congress, Left parties, IUML, and VCK, the TVK government moved forward to prove its strength on the Assembly floor.

TVK Emerges as Single Largest Party

In the Assembly election results, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam secured 108 seats, making it the largest party in Tamil Nadu. However, the party remained 10 seats short of an absolute majority, creating uncertainty over the formation of the next government.

This situation opened the door for post-election alliances and outside support. The Congress and other parties in the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance decided to extend support to the TVK government, saying their decision was based on protecting democracy and respecting the people’s mandate.

Congress Defends Support for Vijay Government

Speaking during the trust vote discussion, Congress Legislature Party leader S. Rajesh Kumar said the confidence motion had placed a historic responsibility on political parties.

According to him, the moment was not just about government formation but about restoring public faith in the Constitution, secularism, and social justice.

He said the election verdict had to be respected and argued that allowing instability would have created room for the BJP to gain influence indirectly in Tamil Nadu politics.

He added that the Congress and other secular parties chose to support TVK to prevent what he described as a possible backdoor entry for the BJP.

DMK Allies Reaffirm Secular Commitment

The DMK’s allies in the Secular Progressive Alliance, including the Left parties, IUML, and VCK, also reaffirmed their support for the TVK government.

Their position was that the alliance’s decision was guided by a larger political objective rather than narrow party calculations.

These parties argued that Tamil Nadu’s political direction should remain rooted in secularism, social justice, and federal values.

They also said the election result showed that voters had rejected divisive politics and wanted a government that could protect democratic principles.

Vijay Reaches Out to Secular Parties

According to the Congress leader, Chief Minister Vijay approached only secular parties for support after the election results became clear. This move was presented as an attempt to form a stable government without compromising on ideological principles.

The support from Congress and DMK allies gave the TVK government the numbers needed to face the trust vote with confidence.

It also marked a significant shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, with TVK becoming the leading force in the new Assembly.

Political Significance of the Trust Vote

The trust vote was more than a routine legislative procedure. It became a test of political alignment, ideological positioning, and post-election stability in Tamil Nadu.

For TVK, the support of Congress and DMK allies strengthened its claim to govern. For the supporting parties, the move was framed as a decision to protect the State from political uncertainty and prevent the BJP from gaining indirect control.

Conclusion

The Tamil Nadu Assembly trust vote highlighted a major political development as Congress and DMK allies reaffirmed support for the Vijay-led TVK government.

With TVK emerging as the single largest party but falling short of a majority, the backing of secular alliance partners became crucial.

The Congress, Left parties, IUML, and VCK defended their support as a step toward protecting democracy, secularism, and social justice.

As Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay leads the new government, the trust vote marks the beginning of a closely watched political chapter in Tamil Nadu.
