LPG Cylinder Rules 2026 - Indane, Bharat Gas and HP Gas Users With PNG May Need to Surrender LPG Connection

Households using Indane Gas, Bharat Gas or HP Gas may soon need to review their cooking gas connection status, especially if they also have a piped natural gas connection.

The latest LPG rule change focuses on the idea of “One Household, One Gas Connection,” meaning a home should not keep both a domestic LPG cylinder connection and a PNG connection at the same time.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas amended the LPG supply rules on March 14, 2026. The official notification says a person with a PNG connection cannot retain a domestic LPG connection or take domestic LPG refills from government oil companies or their distributors. It also says such consumers must surrender their LPG connection.

Why Are LPG and PNG Dual Connections Being Checked?

The main reason behind the rule is to reduce duplicate cooking gas usage and ensure LPG cylinders are available for households that do not have access to PNG.

Many cities already have expanding PNG networks, and the government wants consumers in those areas to shift toward piped gas where possible.

Authorities are reportedly identifying households that are using both LPG and PNG services. This may affect customers of Indane, Bharat Gas and HP Gas if their household already has an active piped gas connection.

Reports have also linked the enforcement push to June-related deadlines in some areas, but consumers should confirm the exact timeline with their local LPG distributor or city gas company.

Who Will Be Affected by the New LPG Rule?

The rule mainly affects households that already have a functional PNG connection and are still using or booking domestic LPG cylinders.

If your home has PNG infrastructure but you have not activated a PNG connection, your case may depend on local availability and distributor verification.

Consumers who rely only on LPG and do not have a PNG connection should not be affected in the same way. However, they may still need to follow regular LPG booking, KYC and delivery verification rules.

Can You Still Book an LPG Refill If You Have PNG?

As per the amended rule, a person with a PNG connection should not take refills of domestic LPG cylinders from government oil companies or their distributors. This means consumers with active PNG may face refill restrictions or may be asked to surrender their domestic LPG connection.

Before cancelling or surrendering anything, households should check their connection status with their LPG distributor and PNG provider.

This is important because rules may be implemented through verification drives, customer notices or distributor-level checks.

How to Switch From LPG to PNG Connection

To switch to PNG, first check whether piped gas is available in your area. You can do this through the website or customer care number of your local city gas distribution company such as IGL, MGL, GAIL Gas, BPCL-backed networks or other authorised providers.

Next, apply online or visit the nearest authorised customer centre. Most PNG applications require basic KYC documents, address proof, property ownership papers or a rent agreement.

After registration, the company may collect a refundable security deposit and installation charges, depending on the local policy.

Once your application is approved, a technician will inspect your home and install the pipeline connection, meter and kitchen fitting. After PNG activation, contact your LPG distributor to understand the surrender process for your Indane, Bharat Gas or HP Gas connection.

Conclusion

The new LPG cylinder rule is important for households using both LPG and PNG. If you already have a PNG connection, you may not be allowed to keep booking domestic LPG refills.

Consumers should verify their status, avoid panic bookings and follow the official surrender or PNG application process. For homes without PNG access, LPG will continue to remain an essential cooking fuel.
