Vijay Claims Majority in Tamil Nadu as TVK Moves Closer to Forming First Coalition Government

Superstar-turned-politician Vijay has claimed majority support before the Tamil Nadu Governor, bringing his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, or TVK, close to forming its first government in the state.

According to the information available, Vijay has secured the backing of 118 MLAs, the exact number required to form the government in Tamil Nadu.

If the numbers hold, the development will mark a historic moment in Tamil Nadu politics, as TVK is expected to lead its first-ever coalition government. The oath-taking ceremony is reportedly scheduled for 11 am tomorrow.

TVK Reaches Majority Mark With Support From Smaller Parties

Vijay’s TVK emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu elections, winning 108 seats on its own. However, the party still needed additional support to reach the majority mark of 118 MLAs.

Several smaller parties have extended support to Vijay, helping TVK move closer to government formation. The support includes legislators from the Left parties, one IUML MLA, and the lone winning candidate from the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, led by TTV Dhinakaran.

The situation remains politically sensitive, as every MLA’s support is crucial for the stability of the proposed coalition government.

VCK Stand Still Creates Political Suspense

While many parties have already made their positions clear, uncertainty continues over the stand of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, or VCK. Vijay is reportedly on his way to meet VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan, a move that could be important for strengthening the new government’s support base.

The VCK’s final decision may influence not only the formation of the government but also the political balance within the new alliance.

In a close-number situation, even small parties can play a major role in deciding the future of the state government.

Left Parties Offer Support But Stay Out of Cabinet

The Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India-Marxist have decided to support Vijay’s TVK but will not join the cabinet. Both Left parties have two MLAs each and were earlier allies of the DMK.

CPI(M) state secretary T.T. Shanmugam said the decision was taken to prevent political instability and avoid the possibility of Governor’s rule or a fresh election. According to him, the Left parties chose to support TVK to ensure that an elected government is formed in Tamil Nadu.

However, the CPI and CPM have made it clear that their support will come from outside the cabinet. This means they may help Vijay prove majority but will not take ministerial positions in the new government.

Congress Seeks Role in New Government

The Congress has also offered conditional support to TVK. Unlike the Left parties, the Congress is reportedly expecting two ministerial berths in the new cabinet.

This could make cabinet formation a major challenge for Vijay, as he will need to balance the expectations of allies while also maintaining control over his government. Coalition politics often requires careful negotiation, especially when the ruling party has only just crossed the majority mark.

DMK and AIADMK Face Major Setback

The election results have significantly changed the political landscape of Tamil Nadu. TVK won 108 seats, while the DMK was reduced to 59 seats. The AIADMK managed to win only 47 seats.

The rise of Vijay’s party has disrupted the traditional rivalry between the DMK and AIADMK, which has dominated Tamil Nadu politics for decades. If TVK forms the government, it will signal a new political era in the state.

Final Thoughts

Vijay’s claim of majority before the Governor has brought Tamil Nadu to the edge of a major political shift. With TVK securing support from smaller parties and the Left choosing to back the government from outside, the path appears clearer for Vijay to become the head of a coalition government.

However, challenges remain. The VCK’s position, Congress’s expectations, cabinet-sharing talks, and long-term stability will all shape the future of this new political arrangement.

For now, Vijay and TVK have crossed a crucial milestone. If the oath ceremony goes ahead as planned, Tamil Nadu may soon witness the beginning of a new chapter in its political history.
